About "Looking Back, Learning Forward: Launching the Project, Sharing Our Memories," by Jordan Banick
Looking Back, Learning Forward is an oral history project that captures the stories of activists and political leaders with a variety of perspectives including those supporting and opposing the efforts to protect the right to abortion in Rhode Island from 2017-2019, as well as those historically involved since Roe.
This exhibition provides a visual representation of the oral history process, a preliminary set of oral histories to engage dialogue and connection, and the chance to share your perspective and oral history.
Collaborators:
- Project Director, Jordan Banick
- Dr. Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur, Rhode Island College Sociology Professor
- Dr. Robert Widell, Jr., University of Rhode Island HIstory Professor and Director of the URI Oral History Lab

"What is Our Bodily Autonomy: A Community Mural Project," by Jonathan Izzard & Abby Wright
When considering your involvement in the community mural, remember: there are countless ways to express your beliefs, viewpoints, experiences, and identity through art.
The prompt we invite you to respond to is the theme, Autonomy—defined as “the right or condition of self-government.”
Think about what feels like yours to own and empowers you in your daily life: whether it’s small everyday freedoms, choices you make for yourself, or bigger experiences that connect to your identity and place in the world.
The intersection of our individuality and lived experiences is what we bring to our communities. When we work together and lift up each other's voices it's powerful and beautiful! We have the ability to create change on a micro-level; in our day to day personal relationships, as well as on a broader community based level. We have to advocate for our community and demand change.
You’ll find a wide buffet of art supplies available to you. There are no restrictions on how you use them, as long as your art fits within your given tile is respectful, and does not harm yourself or others.
This is a space to explore, play, and create freely.
